Local Band Stands Out in the Crowd

Joe Camerlengo from This Is My Suitcase performing at The Basement in Columbus, Ohio.

With a band name like This Is My Suitcase, you know this Columbus-based band isn’t going to be like any band you’ve ever heard.

“I think we sound animated, playful, cute, really wild, and really loud,” said frontman Joe Camerlengo. “Our music is insane, but isn’t that just too obvious to note?”

With one listen to their album, The Keys to Cat Heaven, you can tell This Is My Suitcase put everything they had into it. It took two years to complete the album.

The band came up with the title for their album, The Keys to Cat Heaven, while they were walking around Chicago before a show.

“Mary Lynn (our pianist and female vocalist) was talking to the rest of us about her beliefs, when Nick Manos (our electric guitarist) asked her: ‘If there is no heaven, where do your cats go when they die?’,” said Camerlengo, “to which our resident cat-lady, Mary Lynn, responded: ‘Cat heaven’. ”

With that idea, they came up with the title The Keys to Cat Heaven.

This is My Suitcase recently released The Keys to Cat Heaven online through the label Paper and Plastick.

“We jumped on Paper and Plastick from the first time [founder] Vinnie put the adjective ‘randomly colored’ in front of the wonderful word ‘vinyl’ ,” said Camerlengo.

This Is My Suitcase has had much success besides releasing an album through a record label. They have shared the stage with many big named bands such as Fall Out Boy, The Hush Sound, and The Matches.

With their very unique sound, you can tell how they caught the ears of these famous bands.

“My goal is to write music I wish other bands were playing,” said Joe, “I want to entertain myself. I want people 45 years from now to open up their social studies books and This Is My Suitcase is in there.”
